NPS offers higher potential returns (10-12% equity CAGR historically) vs PPF guaranteed 7.1%, but NPS requires 40% annuity at maturity. PPF is fully tax-free (EEE) while NPS annuity income is taxable. For a 30-year-old investing ₹5,000/month, NPS could build ₹1.1 crore vs PPF around ₹55 lakh at 60. Best strategy: use both. Use the free NPS Calculator on AbacusHand to calculate your exact result instantly.
At age 60, NPS subscribers must use at least 40% of the corpus to purchase an annuity (monthly pension) from an IRDAI-registered insurer. Up to 60% can be withdrawn as a tax-free lump sum. If total corpus is less than ₹5 lakh, full withdrawal is allowed. Annuity rates currently range from 5.5-7% annually. The monthly pension received is taxable as income.
