Formula & Explanation

Net Profit = (Sell Value - Buy Value) - Brokerage - STT - Exchange Charges - GST - Stamp Duty

Total trading charges include: Brokerage (both buy and sell sides, typically 0.03% or ₹20/order for discount brokers), STT (0.1% on sell side for delivery trades), Exchange/Transaction charges (~0.00325% for NSE, ~0.00275% for BSE), GST at 18% on brokerage + exchange charges, and Stamp Duty (0.015% on buy side). SEBI charges of ₹10 per crore also apply. For intraday trades, STT is 0.025% on sell side only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Total trading cost includes brokerage (0–0.03% for discount brokers, 0.3–0.5% for full-service), STT (0.1% on equity delivery), exchange transaction charges (~0.00335%), SEBI charges (0.0001%), GST 18% on brokerage, and stamp duty (0.015% on buy side). On a ₹50,000 equity delivery trade, total charges are approximately ₹175–200. Use the free Brokerage Calculator on AbacusHand to calculate your exact result instantly.

STT (Securities Transaction Tax) is a tax levied by the Indian government on stock market trades. For equity delivery: 0.1% on both buy and sell. For intraday trades: 0.025% on sell side only. For F&O: 0.0125% on sell side for options and 0.01% for futures. On a ₹1 lakh delivery trade, STT = ₹100 per side = ₹200 total. Zerodha charges zero brokerage on equity delivery and flat ₹20 per order (or 0.03%) for intraday and F&O. Groww charges zero for delivery and ₹20 per order for intraday. HDFC Securities charges 0.3–0.5% for delivery. For a ₹1 lakh intraday trade, Zerodha charges ₹20 while HDFC Securities charges ₹300–500. Net profit = (Sell price - Buy price) x Quantity - Total charges. On a ₹50,000 buy and ₹55,000 sell (same day intraday via Zerodha): gross profit = ₹5,000, total charges ~₹85 (brokerage ₹40 + STT ₹13.75 + exchange + GST + stamp duty), net profit ~₹4,915. For delivery trades, charges are higher due to STT on both sides. Use the free Brokerage Calculator on AbacusHand to calculate your exact result instantly.

Delivery trades are held overnight — you pay STT on both buy and sell (0.1% each side). Intraday trades are squared off the same day — STT applies only on sell (0.025%). Brokerage for delivery is often zero at discount brokers; intraday is ₹20/order. On ₹1 lakh: delivery STT = ₹200, intraday STT = ₹25 — making intraday cheaper for short-term traders.
